Chipping away! Wildfire Prep Day 2022

We will be participating in Wildfire Community Preparedness Day by organizing a neighborhood chipping project. As a Firewise Community, Lummi Island Scenic Estates works together to make a difference for the survival of our homes and neighborhood if a wildfire occurs.

We have coordinated a no-charge chipping service to come to your property and chip your pile of limbs and branches. Chips can be left on your property or removed as you wish. The time working on your property will count as matching in-kind services for this grant project.

This great opportunity is made possible by the Lummi Island Fire Department, and we thank Scott Josiah, John Granger, Joan Moye, and Isaac Colgan for leading Lummi Island to join the Washington Adapted Fire Communities Learning Network (WAFAC). “Fire adapted communities” are communities that understand their risk and are taking action to better prepare for, respond to and recover from wildfire.

Please sign up as soon as possible!

To participate you must agree with a free home risk assessment, an informal walk around your property to identify vulnerability to wildfire. The assessment can be scheduled before or after the chipping day at your convenience and will be conducted by Joan Moye of the Fire Department’s Disaster Preparedness Division.

Participants will need to make a neat pile of limbs accessible at the street by Monday June 20. If you have a small amount, think about teaming up with a neighbor to share a pile. The chipping service will not visit your location unless you are signed up.

You must be registered to participate. Please do not leave limbs on the street if you have not signed up.

Defending the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ)

Research shows there are proven methods for preparing properties for withstanding the devastating impacts of a wildfire. This Prep Day, you have the power to protect the part of the community that means the most to you and your family by eliminating vulnerabilities in the HIZ, particularly the immediate 5-foot zone around your residence. What you do really matters!
